TESTIMONIALS

“The team was well-prepared, and the sessions ran smoothly. The content was student-focused, age-appropriate and aligned with our school’s sustainability goals.

The programme successfully captured our students’ interest and encouraged thoughtful discussion on sustainability and environmental responsibility.

We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in the programme and we look forward to future participation if any. Thank you very much!”

— Mr. Goh Chee Wee, Teacher, Ai Tong Primary School

“On behalf of Yuying Secondary School, we would like to sincerely thank the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) for the opportunity to partner with them through the Zero Waste Schools Initiative. It has been a meaningful and enriching experience for our students and educators, and we are grateful for SEC’s guidance and strong support throughout the programme.

The mentoring programme under the Zero Waste Schools Initiative was highly relevant to our students, as it addressed real-world sustainability challenges in an accessible and age-appropriate manner while remaining grounded in authentic environmental issues. Students were provided with a valuable platform to present sustainability challenges they observed within the school context, and SEC mentors played a pivotal role in guiding them to refine and strengthen their ideas, especially with their expertise in driving sustainability in schools.

Through constructive questioning and expert feedback, mentors helped students clarify their thinking, redirect ideas where necessary, and develop a deeper understanding of what makes sustainability initiatives practical, impactful, and sustainable in the long term. Student engagement was strong throughout the programme. Many students demonstrated increased confidence in articulating their ideas and became more receptive to feedback.

More importantly, they developed a deeper awareness that sustainability work goes beyond good intentions—it requires critical thinking, evidence-based decision-making, and consideration of real-world constraints. These learning outcomes contributed positively to students’ growth as reflective learners and active contributors.

The programme also had a positive impact on students’ awareness and behaviours towards sustainability. Students became more mindful of waste-related issues within the school context and were better equipped to propose actionable improvements. For the school, the programme strengthened our sustainability education efforts by bridging classroom learning with expert mentorship, reinforcing the value of partnerships in developing student leadership and environmental stewardship.

We strongly recommend the SEC Zero Waste Schools Initiative to other schools, and hope that the partnership that Yuying Sec School has with Singapore Environmental Council will continue to strengthen the school’s Sustainability Education. The programme provides a well-structured and supportive platform for students to deepen their sustainability understanding, refine their ideas through expert mentorship, and develop the confidence to translate learning into action. It is a valuable initiative that many schools would benefit from coming onboard.”

— Ms. Candice Yong, Teacher, Yuying Secondary School
