Challenge Introduction
Young people today navigate a complex landscape of challenges — from mental and emotional well-being to pressures surrounding their social lives, education, and future careers. Issues such as addictive behaviours, isolation, and uncertainty about the future are becoming increasingly common.
The DeCYPHER Challenge invites you to join us in a meaningful journey — to decipher the challenges young people face and uncover the possible solutions, the distance they must traverse, and the obstacles they must overcome, to better understand their lived realities.
By gaining clearer insights into the needs and aspirations of our youth, we can collectively build stronger support networks and create a future where every young person has the opportunity to thrive.

Through our services, we aim to advance professional practice and strengthen the evidence base of youth work as well as allied helping professions, remaining the only charity in Singapore dedicated exclusively to this mission.

Be the Difference. Suport Youth Work That Works
At CYPHER, we believe every young person deserves access to effective, evidence-based support. Your donation powers intervention programmes, practitioner-led research, and the development of a stronger youth work sector in Singapore.
This isn’t just talk, it’s real impact: more youth work practitioners trained, more lives transformed, and a more resilient, connected community.
Every contribution — no matter the size — makes a real difference.
Your support today helps build a stronger future for those who need it most.
Our Services
At CYPHER, our mission, to generate and translate knowledge into practice, is expressed through our range of services. Each service is designed to advance professional practice and strengthen the evidence base of youth work as well as allied helping professions.
CYPHER’s Work
Elton’s Journey: From Despair to Desperation
When Elton first came to our attention, he was barely holding on; often absent from school, battling depression, anxiety, and panic attacks, struggling with self-harm, and expressing thoughts of suicide. Although many organisations tried to help, Elton never felt safe enough to stay engaged.
Things began to change when he met our Youth Worker. For the first time, Elton found someone who listened without judgment. He started to share his daily struggles and his hopes for the future. Through our evidence-based therapeutic process, he discovered that care, attention, and genuine connection could spark real change.
On the brink of expulsion, Elton and his Youth Worker developed a plan to improve school attendance. Elton agreed to the plan and surprised everyone by remaining committed.
Several months later, Elton is more emotionally stable, more engaged in class, and focused on his upcoming N-Level exams. He still faces challenges, but now he has a mentor he trusts walking beside him at every turn.

Lynda’s Journey: From Defiance to Determination
When Lynda arrived in Secondary 4, she was at odds with everyone—skipping classes, defying rules, and avoiding counsellors at all costs. Suspensions and punishments only deepened her mistrust of adults and left her feeling isolated.
Everything changed when our Youth Worker stopped to really listen. Through a few games of cue sports, Lynda found a safe space to share her frustrations, her struggles at home, and her fierce desire for independence. That simple act of play built the trust she’d been missing.
We then turned the spotlight on her dreams—psychology, law, or fashion design in Poly—and co-created short-term goals, a study schedule, and ongoing tutoring. With each milestone, Lynda’s confidence grew, and her attitude toward school transformed.
Now in Secondary 5, Lynda is focused on her O-Levels and giving back as a peer mentor to younger students. She’s proof that one caring relationship can rewrite a young person’s story.
CYPHER’s Work
Building Knowledge: From Practice to Evidence
Across Singapore, countless passionate individuals and organisations work tirelessly to support young people. Their commitment is unwavering, yet many face a common challenge: most intervention models are adapted from Western frameworks or shaped by top-down governance structures that often overlook the nuances of local culture and practice.
At CYPHER, we are reimagining this landscape. As the only youth-work charity in Singapore grounded in practitioner-led research, we develop and test evidence-based therapeutic modules created specifically for the Singapore context. Our work bridges the gap between front-line experience and research rigour, ensuring that what happens in the field directly informs policy, training, and sector development.
Through this ground-up approach, CYPHER is not only improving individual practice but transforming the youth-work ecosystem itself — one study, one insight, and one practitioner at a time.
